Nancy and Theo (11)
‘With the pressure vest Theo has a better focus’
‘Sounds and visual stimuli from the environment quickly create distraction‘
(Occupational therapist Nancy) Theo is an 11 year old boy with a mild muscle disease. He acts impulsively and often has difficulty concentrating and planning tasks. Sounds and visual stimuli from the environment quickly create distraction. But also the thoughts in Theo’s head make sure he is distracted from what he’s doing. As a result, he needs a lot of help.
‘Theo says he experiences more peace now’
In my treatments I noticed that Theo found the ‘therapeutic brushing technique’ very pleasant; it gave him peace. Brushing is a method within the sensory integration therapy to offer touch and deep pressure stimuli. As a result of this, I came up with the idea to make Theo try a Squease. With the pressure vest Theo has a better focus. He is now much more focused on his tasks during the therapy sessions and he acts less impulsive. Theo says he experiences more peace now. After these positive effects in the therapy sessions, Theo started to wear Squease at school. He puts on the jacket himself and consciously chooses specific moments to inflate it. He inflates it for example when he has language classes, but also after a short break when he plays in the schoolyard. It helps him to calm down after playing and to match his alertness with the situation.
‘He gained better scores on his tests than ever before’
According to Theo the jacket works well at school. He gained better scores on his tests than ever before. Of course it does not 100% sure that this is the result of wearing the Squease vest, but it is certain that he is now much more focused.
