Monique and Mandy (30)
‘Squease offers Mandy the possibility of spending her days more pleasantly’
‘When she’s very nervous, she tries to damage her environment and herself’
(Physiotherapist Monique) Mandy (not her real name) is a woman of 30 years old, with mental, hearing and visual impairment and autism-related disorder. Her developmental age and her social-emotional functioning are like a 1 year old child. Mandy shows rapid mood swings from happy to very tense. When she’s very nervous, she tries to damage her environment and herself. We have been using a weighted blanket for a couple of years now, because Mandy likes to experience a lot of deep pressure on her body. The Squease vest seemed like a good addition to the blanket, her movement activities and deep pressure offered by her therapists in the form of massage, for example.
‘We can inflate the vest when Mandy is very tense’
We were very careful with the process of introducing the Squease vest to Mandy. During the first two weeks, she wore the vest without inflating it. After this period, the vest was inflated in moments that Mandy was in a relaxed state of mind. To our surprise she accepted that and was laughing when we deflated the vest. Right now, we can inflate the vest when Mandy is very tense. She doesn’t reject the vest and already asked for it a couple of times.
‘The vest helps Mandy to calm down when she’s stressed’
By inflating the vest a couple of times during the day, Mandy gets the deep pressure she needs. It’s also a tool that helps Mandy to calm down when she’s stressed and thus to recover from this stress. We are very pleased that Squease is a tool that is accepted by Mandy and offers her a possibility of spending her days in a more pleasant manner.
