FAQs about the Squease vest

What is Squease?

What is Squease?

Please watch our animation below to find out what Squease is.

Squease is an inflatable deep pressure vest, designed for people with sensory integration difficulties, like people with autism, ADHD, hypersensitivity or learning disabilities. When inflated the vest becomes tighter and applies a firm hug-like pressure. Deep pressure can have the effect of giving you a safe and secure feeling. The use of deep pressure can help improve sensory processing and integration. Deep pressure has a regulating effect. It can calm and soothe an over-stimulated or ‘fearful’ nervous system; helping you to cope with stress, anxiety and sensory overload, avoid meltdowns, improve concentration or fall asleep quicker.

Where did the idea for Squease come from?

Squease is the creation of four designers and engineers; Andy Brand, Katrien Ploegmakers, Sheraz Arif and Menno Kroezen, who met whilst studying on the Industrial Design Engineering Course at the  Royal College of Art in London. Squease was the result of their graduation project.

Watch the full Squease story below and read more here.

Why is Squease spelled this way?

The word SQUEASE is a combination of the words SQUEEZE and EASE. Making Squease a firm hug with a calming effect.

What is the difference between a weighted vest and Squease vest?

Squease provides deep pressure on the upper body, similar to weighted vests. However Squease uses air pressure instead of weights. The vest is simply inflated by squeezing a hand pump, allowing the user to specify and regulate the amount of deep pressure to their personal needs. Working with air instead of weights makes the vest nice and light, foldable, discreet and easy to carry, so you have it at hand when needed.

Who may benefit?

Who may benefit from a pressure vest?

Kids, teenagers and adults with sensory processing difficulties could benefit from using a Squease pressure vest. People who like being held firmly, seek deep pressure and those who currently use products such as weighted vests may also like wearing a Squease vest.

The Squease vests have been successfully used with people with:

  • Acquired brain injury (ABI)
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Asperger’s Syndrome (AS)
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Not sure if Squease would be effective?
Have a read in our Why Squease? section or try our rental programme detailed here.

Which ages are the Squease pressure vest for?

Squease vests are available for children starting from 4 years and up, teenagers and adults. We recommend using our sizing chart as a guide to select the right vest size rather than your age.
Check our sizing page here.

Is the pressure vest just for people with autism or ADHD?

The pressure vest is not only suitable for people with Autism or ADHD. People without these diagnoses can just as well benefit from a pressure vest, for example if you often feel restless, have problems concentrating, have panic attacks or trouble falling asleep.

  • Do you often become restless or stressed by all the (sensory) stimuli you have to process?
  • Are you easily distracted and do you have problems focussing?
  • Are you having trouble falling asleep because there are still a lot of thoughts buzzing in your mind?
  • Do you find it hard to feel the boundaries of your own body?
  • Do you find it difficult to make transitions between different activities?
  • Are you often looking for a firm pressure on your body (e.g. firm hugs, lay underneath heavy things, wear tight clothing)?

….than Squease could be something for you!

How does Squease work?

What is Sensory Integration?

Read more on Sensory Integration and the effects of deep pressure here.

Sensory Integration
A stimulus is information that is received through our senses; seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching (external stimuli). We also receive internal stimuli via our bodies such as our thoughts or a signal when we are hungry. This information is processed in our brains so that we can respond and react accordingly. The process is called sensory processing or sensory integration.

Sensory Integration Disorder
Sensory Integration (SI) Disorder is a neurological disorder that causes problems with capturing, processing and responding to sensory information. Individuals with sensory processing differences often have a differently tuned filter on the information they receive through their senses. They can sometimes react to stimuli very strongly or not at all, and have difficulties distinguishing between important and unimportant information, which may lead to anxiety, stress and a sensory overload.

What is Deep Pressure?

Read more on Sensory Integration and the effects of deep pressure here.

Deep pressure is the application of firm pressure on the body allowing the central nervous system to better interpret the information received via the senses. Everyone has a natural need for safety, security and comfort. The soothing effect of deep pressure is nothing new. Think of the effect of a firm hug when you are upset or the swaddling of restless babies. Individuals with sensory processing differences, who often feel restless or anxious, can greatly benefit from deep pressure. It helps calm and soothe an over-stimulated or ‘anxious’ nervous system and provides a safe and protected feeling.

The regulatory effect of deep pressure
Deep pressure has a regulatory effect on sensory processing and alertness. It has a calming and soothing effect on overstimulation and can increase alertness and concentration when someone is understimulated. This can allow you to better cope with stress and overstimulation, reduce meltdowns, improve concentrate and fall asleep quicker. The regulating effect can last up to 1 – 2 hours after the pressure has been applied.

Is there any scientific research or proof into the effectiveness of the Squease deep pressure vest?

How to use and evaluate Squease?

Watch our ‘How to use Squease’ animation and read the user manual to get the best results. The evaluation booklet can help you to evaluate the beneficial effects of the vest on your day-to-day challenges. Our complete guide on how to use Squease is here.

How to use Squease

Here’s a short version of the instructions:

  • You may find it more comfortable to wear your Squease pressure vest over a T-shirt.
  • Fully fasten the zip. Fasten the VELCRO straps so that the vest fits loosely when deflated and delivers a comfortable, deep pressure when inflated. It is recommended to start with a gap of two to three finger-widths between the front of the vest and the body.
  • Squeeze the hand-pump repeatedly to inflate the vest, until you feel a comfortable, firm pressure. Deflate the vest with the air release button on the hand-pump.
  • For the safety of the user, the hand pump has a built-in valve, which limits the maximum pressure level of the vest. The Squease kids vests have a second safety valve which releases over-pressure. So you can never inflate your vest too far.
  • To remove the hand pump after inflating the vest, fully depress the push button on the pump release socket and pull. The vest will remain inflated!
  • For best results inflate the pressure vest for up to 20 minutes at a time and then deflate it for a minimum of 20 minutes before inflating it again. You may prefer to have the pressure applied for shorter or longer periods of time. There is no harm in keeping the vest inflated for a longer period.
  • Before introducing Squease in your daily routine, think about when you feel most stressed, anxious or when you experience sensory overload.
  • Introduce the Squease pressure vest gradually, as it provides a form of stimulation that may require some getting used to.
  • If you are supporting a young Squease user or person with learning disabilities, guide them by giving hints on when to inflate and deflate the vest, but always taking direction from them.
  • The lightweight vest may be worn throughout the day under your regular clothing or zipped into a Squease hooded top, so that it can be inflated as and when required.
  • If you are in doubt or new to using deep pressure techniques, please consult an Occupational Therapist or medical professional, who is familiar with this technique.

How long do I keep the vest inflated?

For the best results inflate the pressure vest for up to 20 minutes at a time and then deflate it for a minimum of 20 minutes before inflating it again.

You may prefer to have the pressure applied for shorter or longer periods of time. Experiment with the duration of applying pressure to determine an optimal length of time for you. If you find that you want to keep your vest inflated for longer than 20 minutes – for example for the duration of a longer stress-inducing activity – you will not experience any harm in keeping the vest inflated for a longer period.

Can you overinflate the vest?

It’s not possible to over inflate the Squease vest with a Squease hand pump. For the safety of the user, the hand pump has a built-in valve, which limits the maximum pressure level the vest can be inflated to. The Squease Kids vests have a second safety valve built into the vest to ensure a safe pressure limit is not exceeded.

DO NOT inflate the pressure vest with any device other than pumps supplied by Squease Ltd.

Can I wear the vest underneath my own clothing?

The vest can be easily worn underneath your own clothing. Even when inflated the pressure vest maintains a thin, discreet profile so it will be barely visible when you wear it under a sweater or shirt. Once you have inflated the vest, you can disconnect the pump so that the pump is no longer visible. You may find it more comfortable to wear your Squease pressure vest over a thin shirt.

Squease has special designed hooded tops which the pressure vest can be zipped into.

Does the pressure vest affect your breathing?

The pressure vest is designed in such a way that it will not obstruct your breathing. The Squease pressure vest puts pressure on the upper body, which makes you more aware of your breathing. In that way Squease encourages you to breathe from “the stomach” rather than the chest.

How and when to use Squease?

In which moments is the vest mostly used?

The pressure vest can be used during moments of:

  1. Over-stimulation (e.g. when feeling stressed, anxious or frustrated). The deep pressure can help you feel calm and recover to a balanced emotional state.
  2. Prior to or during experiencing rising tension. Applying deep pressure can help you prevent from becoming stressed, anxious or sensory overloaded.
  3. Under-stimulation (e.g. responses such as low concentration or low engagement). The deep pressure vest can help you feel more alert and able to focus.

In which ways can the pressure vest be used?

The vest should be inflated when you feel a need for deep pressure. This could also be to prevent stress, frustration or sensory overload. Some users will prefer to inflate the vest in circumstances where they tend to feel under- or overstimulated. Other users find that they have a constant need for pressure and such users benefit most when the vest is inflated at predetermined times throughout the day. Experiment with your vest to find what works best for you.

Using the pressure vest can be:

  1. Time related: the vest is used (inflated) during a certain time period, e.g. daily at 10:00, 15:00 and 19:00.
  2. Activity related: the vest is used (inflated) during certain activities, e.g. at during school tasks or before going to bed.
  3. Arousal level related: the vest is used (inflated) when feeling under- or overstimulated, e.g. when feeling frustrated or stressed.

or any combination of the above that best suits your needs.

In which situations can you use the Squease vest?

Read the user stories to find out when others use their vests.

The most common scenarios in which Squease is used can be found below.

Your Squease pressure vest can be used to help you:

  • feel calmer and recover more quickly from overstimulation, stress or anxiety.
  • deal with rising tension or frustration (e.g. triggered by waiting, preparing for or wanting to finish an activity, having disagreements or accommodating unexpected changes).
  • reduce complex behaviour (e.g. shut-down, aggression, meltdown or self-injury).
  • fall asleep and stay asleep.
  • improve body awareness and postural imbalances.
  • reduce distractibility, resulting in improved concentration and ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently.
  • make transitions between activities.
  • be more comfortable in stimulus-rich environments such as supermarkets, at a birthday party, taking public transport, in a group or busy corridor.
  • participate in social situations such as group discussions or meetings.
  • feel safer and more comfortable and secure in general.

The soothing and comforting effects that are experienced when using your pressure vests may also improve mood and make you feel happier.

Rent a Squease pressure vest?

Thinking of renting a Squease?

Read our step by step guide to renting a Squease vest here.

We want to give everyone who feels that they may benefit from a Squease inflatable pressure vest the opportunity to try it before buying it.

If you are based in Europe you can rent a Squease for as long as you like, to make sure that it is effective before purchasing the vest. The way it works is that you pay a rental price of £60 for a 2 week trial of the vest. You can rent for longer at a cost of £80 for 4 weeks or a £100 for 6 weeks. If you like the vest, then the rental costs come off the price of purchasing the vest. If not then return the vest to us to the address below.

Squease Ltd
Top Floor
90 Main Yard
90 Wallis Road
London E9 5LN
United Kingdom

The rental scheme also operates in Australia, Denmark and New Zealand via our resellers.

When does the rental period start and end?

The rental period starts from the date you receive the Squease pressure vest, not the date you order or pay for the rental period. So for example if you have ordered a 2 week rental, the 2 week time period starts from the moment you receive the vest. We track all deliveries sent to customers and keep the delivery dates in our systems, so there is no need for you to let us know when the vest was received

The rental period ends the day after the rental weeks have passed. The last day of the rental period is a normal day in which you can still use and test the vest.

More information on the rental programme can be found here.

How do I rent for a bit longer?

If you would like to try the Squease vest for a longer period then you initially indicated, you can opt to extend the rental period at a rate of £20 per two weeks. Email us and we will organise this for you. If you decide to purchase the vest after the extended period all rental fees, including the fee you paid to extend, will be deducted from the purchase price.

What happens at the end of the rental period?

At the end of the rental period whatever you decide to do we would love to get your feedback. Either by email or on the phon 0203 695 9337. We would also appreciate get back your completed evaluation book.

You have three options at the end of the rental period:

1) If you feel the vest has been beneficial and wish to purchase then let us know and we will organise the balance to be paid. We will email you an invoice that can be paid by any or accepted payment methods. You can also at this point choose to buy a set or any of the accessories. The money that has been paid for the rental will be taken off the purchase price of the vest or set. So for example if you have opted for a two week rental and have paid £60 and decide to purchase the vest you only have to pay a further £185 (purchase price of vest £245 – rental price paid £60).

2) If you would like to try the Squease vest for a longer period, you can opt to extend the rental period at a rental rate of £20 per two weeks. Email us and we will organise this for you. If you decide to purchase the vest after the extended period all rental fees, including the fee you paid to extend, will be deducted from the purchase price.

3) If the vest is not as effective as you hoped, email us to tell us that you are returning the vest. Then put the vest into protective packaging, with a completed returns form and post it back to us via the post office at the following address:

Squease Ltd
Top Floor
90 Main Yard
90 Wallis Road
London E9 5LN
United Kingdom

If sending from the UK the cost for sending back from the post office should be between £3- £5, we recommend sending the vest back on a signed for service.

Which countries do you run the rental scheme in?

We currently rent directly to anyone in Europe. The rental scheme also operates in Australia, Denmark and New Zealand via our distributors. You can contact them here.

At present we do not run the rental scheme in the US or Canada. Join our mailing list or follow us on Twitter and Facebook to be the first to know when we run the rental scheme outside of Europe.

What if the goods come back damaged?

We appreciate the some of the users who try Squease have extreme behaviours and have experience of users chewing the handpump and being quite physical with the product. Squease is robust and was designed with these types of users in mind.

Most vests are returned in good condition and it is on this basis that we are able to run the rental scheme.  Occasionally a vest is severely damaged or in very poor condition and we are forced to charge a repair or clean up fee.  The fee will be evaluated  when we receive and review the vest. We tend to avoid charging anything if possible but if you have a user who has a particular set of behaviours that you would like to discuss with us pre a trial, then please email us at or call us on 0203 695 9337.

Squease sizes and models

How do I choose the right vest size?

To get the right fit and best results, select your size carefully on our sizing page, so that the vest fits loosely around your torso when fully deflated and provides you with a comfortable, firm pressure when inflated.

The vests can be adjusted with the Velcro parts on the vest. Do not automatically use the default size you would normally wear. We recommend not to select the pressure vest a size bigger for future growth, since a too big vest will not deliver enough pressure. Some children and teenagers grow very fast and therefore you can use our trade-in programme.

What is the difference between the kids and teens/adults sized vests?

The kids vests and the pressure vests for teenagers and adults have a different model.

  1. The model for children in sizes XXS and XS has a fabric front panel and an inflatable rear panel, a second safety valve and is adjustable on the sides and over the shoulders.
  2. The pressure veest model for teenagers and adults in the sizes small, medium and large, is adjustable in the sides, has an inflatable front and rear panel and can be zipped into a matching Squease hooded top.

A full description of the product features and differences between the kids vests and teenager / adults sizes are detailed here.
